Pit Bull in Allentown Found Beaten by Hatchet

From afar, a young pit bull looks like any other playful pup, but up close, it more resembles the dog of Frankenstein.

“I suspect somebody took something like a hatchet, potentially to knock her out,” said veterinarian Elena Sawickij of the Allentown Animal Clinic.

Whatever it was cracked her skull, and that’s just the latest trauma the dog, dubbed Sally, has endured in her short life. Picked up by police in downtown Allentown on Monday and taken to the Lehigh County Humane Society, Sally is severely underweight and has scratches all over her face and body.

“She may have been a bait dog.” Sawickij.

Sawickij stitched Sally up Monday night. She said it’s the worst case of animal abuse she’s ever seen.

Six months ago, an adult pit bull named Charmane, who officials said was wrapped in a blanket soaked with chemicals, then set on fire, took the dubious title of worst-case scenario.

“Unfortunately, we do see animal abuse cases on a fairly regular basis,” Sawickij said.

There are happy endings to these tragic tales. Charmane was adopted and made a full recovery. Sally, too, is expected to make a full recovery and will need a foster family.

“I’m just amazed she didn’t have brain damage. She is still so loving to human, given what she’s been through,” Sawickij said.

It proves that dogged determination is alive and well. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Lehigh County Humane Society at 610-797-1205.
